Open Election Thread

Here are a few statistical highlights regarding the First Global (youth 18-29) participation in the 2008 presidential election.

According to initial exit poll data, 66% of First Globals voted for Barack Obama and 32% voted for John McCain. This is the highest proportion of the First Global vote received by any one presidential candidate since exit polls began tracking votes by age groups in 1976. For comparison’s sake, John Kerry received 54% of the FG vote in 2004, Al Gore received 48% of the FG vote in 2000, and Bill Clinton received 53% and 43% of the FG vote in 1996 and 1992 respectively.

Furthermore, First Globals have increasingly diverged from the voting public as a whole. Obama received 66% of the First Global vote compared to 52% of the general vote, while Kerry received 54% of the FG vote compared to 48.1% of the general vote and Gore received 48.0% of the FG vote compared to 48.3% of the general vote. In all presidential elections between 1976 and 2000, the differences in proportion of votes received by the Democratic candidate between First Globals and the general population never exceeded 3.0%.

Turnout analysis is not yet complete but all indications are that this election will mark the largest First Global voter turnout since 1972 (when the voting age was lowered from 21 to 18). Because turnout increased in all age groups, the proportion of the electorate represented by First Globals is likely to remain stable.

For further statistical analysis and discussion of young voters, we recommend the website of the very comprehensive Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, CIRCLE.

But we know statistics only tell part of the story, and that’s where you come in. We’d like to hear about your election experiences – whom did you vote for and why? When did you decide who to vote for? Do you feel youth had more of an impact in this election than in others? What will the youth role be in future elections? Did one campaign do a better job of reaching out to young voters? What do you think were the most important issues to young voters? What do you think President Obama’s first tasks should be?

Obama's campaign was really into technology - the text messages, the email databases, the enhanced online fundraising, the online recruitment of volunteers. Republicans seemed to lag behind, but they will need that to engage young voters in my opinion.

I think the most important issues for young voters are similar to the most important issues to all voters - the economy and jobs, especially since many of us are either still in school or coming right out of school into a very tight job market.

I saw no interesting difference between Obama and McCain. They both argued that there were HUGE differences, sure, but when faced with the actual political decisions regarding the bailout and the crisis in Georgia, they both reacted in the exact same way. In fact, they offered the exact same solutions as Bush did (more government intervention in the economy; speedier expansion of NATO).

I worked the phones for the Obama campaign and contacted people to see if they would support Obama. I think there was a huge difference between the Obama and McCain campaigns. The closer it got to voting, the more hateful McCain became, while Obama stayed cool and on track. If Obama creates new jobs by going with the wind, solar, and turbine energy, there will be thousands of jobs made available to both the young voters as well as the middle aged people that are out of work.

Jobs are created by the private sector. Since when is the president's job to "create jobs"?

So many jobs have been lost since Bush became president. Anytime I have to contact someone regarding my credit cards, adding minutes to my phone, etc., I talk to people from another country that can't even understand our language. So many of our companies have moved overseas just to save a buck, and it's not fair to the American people. If Obama can create jobs by using solar, wind, or turbine enery, then that's great. No, it's not his place to create jobs, but it would sure help.

That's what FDR did - the New Deal created jobs that also served the needs of the country. National parks, public works/buildings,at this is a great framework for the new president to build on. Repair aging highways and bridges, improve and replace - or create in some places - technology infrastructure, repair or replace old schools, research for new forms of energy. The possibilities are endless. Even better - tie it to a work for college program...

First Globals? I'm jealous. I didn't get a cool name for my generation like that. I just got "Generation X." That's not even a name; it's just a letter!

But about the election...I voted for Obama. I would have voted early but in Maryland you have to sign that you have a good excuse or something so I waited in line the morning of Nov. 4. Long line - about 1.5 hour wait, which is unusual at the polling place I was at (so I heard) and I definitely saw a lot of young people there, though there were people of all ages.

I am amazed by Phili, though. Some people in Philadelphia, many of them students from some particular university there, waited 11 hours to vote. Now that's dedication.

Thanks but no thanks. If it were not for the war FDR would had gone down in history as the worst president of all time.

Anonymous poster #3 is right on. I’m wondering how long it will take for people to wake up from the euphoria to realize its business as usual in Washington. I’d love to be proven wrong, but I won’t be holding my breath.

i am a first global and was very excited by Obama's campaign - i even volunteered to help out at one of his headquarters a few times. I am worried that the expectations for him are so high and the problems and recession we face are so large that he will disappoint people though.

Recession so large? How large? We had one quarter of negative growth and that was less than 0.5%.

"And for those accusing Obama of being a dictator and a Marxist, have some respect for this guy."

I don't remember the part about Obama being a dictator. In any case, that argument was made while Obama was merely a presidential candidate.

FYI - You don't remember because the story was released today. A congressman from Georgia warned the masses of President-Elect Obama's potential to be a dictator.

Oh yeah, that's from the same Congressman who wanted to remove magazines like Playboy from military bases, right? Who needs SNL when you have this level of self-parody.

(Spelling error correction)As a young, first time Presidential election voter, I voted for Barack Obama. I don't agree with EVERYTHING on the man's agenda, but I do believe this country needs a new way of operating for the next four years and I believe Obama can facilitate this process. McCain, well, he's too old. He may be somewhat healthy now, but as you get older, your health depreciates. Who knows how healthy he could be in four years. I wouldn't want to take that risk. And for those accusing Obama of being a dictator and a Marxist, have some respect for this guy. He's going to be your 44th President. First, give him a chance! He's going to need our help to dig this country out of the hole it's in.

i don't remember it because you implied that it was a widely spread accusation (such as calling obama 'socialist' during the campaign) which could possibly interfere with his activities in the office ("give him a chance"). it turns out it wasn't.

Noob-Saibot83 said...

I implied that it was a widely spread accusation because the story was being made available via the INTERNET. Thus, millions and millions of eyes can now see the Congressman's accusation in the story.

So what? That doesn't mean they will endorse it. The accusation is an aberration, not a widely shared view, as you implied.

I'm not saying millions of people who read that story will endorse his accusation. That is foolish. I know the accusation is apart from the norm. I'm saying, the story regarding the accusation will be widely viewed because of its availability on the internet. That's all.

I agree with lynnehelen. First Globals is a much better and more promising name than "Generation X." I was just thinking to myself how times have changed so much. We were labeled as the self-centered generation. The slackers that just didn't care. Sometimes I wonder...Did I out grow my Generation...or was my Generation completely mislabeled? While I still tend to crank a Nirvana or REM tune when I hear one on a classic rock station, I do have a sense of respect for my parents, and I do care about the world and the people that surround me.

Anyway, I too voted for Obama. There was just an energy I felt coming from him as I watched the debates. I will admit. I did not pay much attention during the primaries or even early on in the campaign, but my mind was made up watching Obama speaking during the debates.

I cannot really speak about voter turn out, as I live in a very small community, and I voted on my way to work...but I will say it was just awesome watching people from all walks of life coming together to celebrate our new President-elect after it was apparent that Obama would be our next President. I found myself parked in front of my TV. I felt a sense of relief and that real change is coming for this country. We are headed in a new direction. Regardless of your own personal opinions about Obama, don't you just feel like doors of opportunity were opened that were once feared shut? I do. I walk around with a great sense of pride in being American since the election. I think all Americans' voices were heard. All registered voters who went out to show their support and cast their vote made this moment happen. And while change and improvement may not happen overnight...show your support and encouragement for the new administration.

I'm not sure how you can publish a blog called First Globals and pretend to be interested in the honest opinion of young people in this country, when you participate in ridiculous push polling at the whim of your customers. Your questions on this blog are quite benign; however, when I took my last Zogby survey I ran into questions like this:

If you knew Barack Obama supported a plan to place a 75% excise tax on the sale of firearms - where a $500 rifle would now cost $875 with tax, would that have made you...

If you knew Barack Obama supports repealing legislation that currently prevents non-government organizations, which receive federal funding, from providing abortions in other nations, such as China where coercive abortions are performed based on the gender of the fetus, would that make you...

If you knew about Barack Obama's support for a tax plan that would raise the top tax rate on individuals to 56% when social security taxes are included, would that have made you...

Do you agree or disagree that an increase in taxes on wealthy Americans and businesses will further hurt an already shaky economy, or do you think it will make no difference?

Barack Obama said during a campaign stop that redistribution of wealth, taxing wealthier Americans in order to give money back to low-income Americans, was good for everybody. Do you agree or disagree with Obama when it comes to redistribution of wealth?
-----------

These were not even the most ridiculous of the claims, and they were all meant to prey on the lies and mischaracterizations that are being perpetuated by extreme fear-mongering conservatives that are trying to turn the country against their new President. This poll was after the election, and is obviously trying to sway public support against the President-elect's new agenda, whatever that may be.

How can you consider yourself an independent polling agency when you participate in these ridiculous scams?

yeah, what's up with push-polling?

Message testing and push polling are completely different things, you know..
